In the world of Lions Clubs International, the mission to serve often finds its most profound impact through specialized initiatives. For Erik Ranschaert, this mission is personified through his dedicated role as the District Representative for SOHAP (Special Olympics Healthy Athletes Program) within Lions Clubs Belgium.

What is SOHAP?

SOHAP is a flagship partnership between Lions Clubs and the Special Olympics. It aims to bridge the significant healthcare gap faced by individuals with intellectual disabilities. The program provides free health screenings, ranging from vision and hearing to dental and overall physical fitness, ensuring that athletes receive the care they might otherwise miss.

Erik’s Role and Impact

As a District Representative, Erik serves as a vital link between the national SOHAP committee and the local clubs. His responsibilities include:

  • Advocacy & Awareness: Educating clubs on the unique health challenges faced by Special Olympics athletes.

  • Coordination: Organizing and supporting medical screenings during the National Games and local sporting events.

  • Fundraising Leadership: Erik is known for taking his commitment to new heights—literally. He recently represented Belgium in the international "3 Peaks Challenge," an arduous expedition to raise vital funds for medical equipment and sustainable healthcare for athletes.

Professional Expertise Meets Volunteerism

Erik’s contribution is uniquely bolstered by his professional background as a renowned radiologist and professor. By blending his medical expertise with the Lions’ spirit of service, he ensures that SOHAP Belgium remains a global leader in providing dignity and health to those who need it most.

Through his work as a District Representative, Erik Ranschaert continues to prove that "We Serve" is not just a motto, but a lifelong commitment to inclusive health.
